“Although the expected participation of President Obama played a significant role in the global media, the American TV news reported about the Copenhagen summit very sparsely until now.” says Roland Schatz, the president of the Zurich based media analysis institute Media Tenor. ”The climate issues gained attention in the American media in 2007 not only from the UN climate study, but also from Al Gore receiving the Nobel Peace Prize with his movie later that year. After that, the interest of the media declined sharply.”
The analysis of Media Tenor furthermore reveals the FOX News special report with Brit Hume as the network broadcaster wit the highest attention for climate issues in the US since 2007. This, however, was to a large part due to negative reporting on Al Gore and his Noble Prize.
The researchers of Media Tenor analyzed a total of 1.670 reports on climate change, the Kyoto protocol and climate conferences in 12 German, British and American TV news media between January 1st 2007 and November 30th 2009. The media set included ARD Tagesthemen, ZDF Heute Journal, Tagesschau, Heute, BBC Six o´clock news, BBC Ten o´clock news, ITN early evening news, ITV News at ten, NBC nightly news, ABC world news tonight, CBS nightly new and FOX Special report with Brit Hume.
